About three dozen people in China are suffering from a newly identified virus from the same family as the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses.
The virus, named Langya henipavirus or LayV, was found in feverish people, although there is no evidence of person to person transmission.
Those affected were mainly farmers who reported signs of liver and kidney damage, along with some blood cell abnormalities, fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite, and pain.
The Langya virus was found in the throat samples of 35 patients in the Shandong and Henan provinces of China
The researchers said there was no evidence of close contact or exposure, suggesting that human transmission may be an isolated event.
The virus is suspected to have jumped from animals to humans through a process called zoonosis.
A report in the New England Journal of Medicine found the presence of the virus in 27% of shrews, suggesting that these mammals may be the natural host for Langya henipavirus .
